Let the sun shine!

(Or don’t)

Somehow, it’s already March, and despite that chill wind that’s been in the air the past few days, spring is definitely on its way! I know this for several reasons — first of all, those bulbs I planted with the kids are starting to peek through and offer little bursts of color the cheer up the drear!

And secondly, the days are getting longer, and the sun is getting higher in the sky. While this is a warm welcome for most of us in London, it is not without its problems. For instance: my home office is in our kitchen extension, which just so happens to feature glass walls and ceilings. A wonderful, cheerful, bright place to work in the dead of winter, but right now…this is what my space looks like:

Ignoring my messy desk, please, do you see the problem? Those wonderful rays of sunshine shine right on my computer monitor, meaning I either can’t work for several hours each morning — which just so happens to be my most productive time of day — or I squint blindly at the screen and power through, which results in the inevitable headache.

I say this not for sympathy (okay, maybe just a little), but because I’m sure the increasing sunlight has its own problems for many of you as well — more difficult nap times for little ones, and soon, more difficult bedtimes (and waking times!) even for older children as we hurtle towards the summer solstice when the sun rises at 4:43 and won’t set until 9:22!!

So, in my search for a solution to my office problem, I came across Itzala that specialises in solutions for roof windows, just like I have. But I know so many of you, like me, have one of those attic conversion bedrooms that also have windows in the ceiling, and that these conversions are many times the children’s rooms. So, you can imagine how excited I was to learn that they not only do blinds for this kind of window, but they do DISNEY blinds!! That’s right, you can have total blackout blinds (for those amazing sleeping in Saturdays) with Mickey, Minnie, Bambi, Planes, Pooh or even Princesses, so your little ones will be just as excited about the new blinds as you are!

Those long days of summer are fast approaching, so better get planning. Trust me, you’ll thank me on that first day they sleep past 5 a.m.!
