Garsons Fruit and Veg Picking - Esher, London
It’s time to bring in the bounty! Autumn is here, and city-dwellers might be interested to know it is not too difficult to get out into the fields and help bring in the strawberries, raspberries, apples, runner beans, courgettes, spinach, beetroot, carrots, marrows, sweetcorn … the list goes on and on. The kids and I have made numerous pies and preserves from the blackberry harvest collected in various London parks, but there is something really fun about Pick Your Own.
While their are numerous places where you can pick your own around London, for several years running we have gone to Garsons in Surrey. This is not just a farm, its an entire growing complex complete with garden centre, award-winning butcher (truly fantastic bacon and sausages), restaurant, cooking shop and farm stand. In addition to all of this, there are play areas for the kids.
This journey is easy by car and super convenient by train. From Victoria Station, you can take a train to Esher and grab a taxi from the station or you can walk it in about 30 minutes (not the nicest walk) and there are busses that can run you closer.
The place is enormous and the kids feel an immediate elation when they witness an entire strawberry field. Its amazing how quickly they can fill up the empty punnet and how long they work away at would could quickly become a tedious task.
The raspberry bushes are even better as my middle aged back doesn’t have to bend over for so long. The kids were industrious and collected a good taking rom the raspberry patch.
Best part of Garsons, its free to enter: just own up to how much your kids eat in the field when you go to pay for your produce.
